Inlays & Onlays

Inlays and onlays are custom-made restorations used to repair teeth with moderate damage or decay, offering a durable and natural-looking alternative to fillings.

Inlays & Onlays Explained

What Are They?

Inlays and onlays are lab-made restorations used when a tooth is too damaged for a filling but not damaged enough to need a crown. An inlay fits inside the tooth’s biting surface, while an onlay covers one or more of the cusps.

What Will My Dentist Do?

Your dentist will clean the damaged area and take a digital or physical impression of your tooth. A custom inlay or onlay is then made to match your tooth exactly. At a second appointment, it is bonded securely in place and polished for a seamless fit.

What Are the Benefits?

Inlays and onlays are strong, long-lasting, and preserve more of your natural tooth than a full crown. They restore function, protect the tooth from further damage, and blend beautifully with your smile.

When Are Inlays and Onlays Used?

These restorations are ideal for teeth with moderate decay, large old fillings, or cracks that need more support than a standard filling. They’re often used on molars and premolars where strength is essential.

What Materials Are Available?

Inlays and onlays are typically made from porcelain, composite resin, or gold. Porcelain and resin match your tooth colour for a natural look, while gold is extremely durable and ideal for patients with heavy bite pressure.

How Long Do They Last?

With good care, inlays and onlays can last 10 to 15 years or more. Regular brushing, flossing, and dental check-ups help keep both the restoration and surrounding tooth healthy.
